MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

1. Mission

The mission of the Baltic-American Biotaxonomy Institute (B.A.B.I.) is to enrich the ties between the Baltic States and the United States, as well as other American countries, through scientific research and programs of education centering on the Neotropical, Nearctic and global biodiversity inventory and taxonomy. Visibly strengthening the Baltic-United States ties is among its core goals.

2. The main objectives of the Institute are the following:

2.1. To promote scientific cooperation between the Baltic States and the United States, as well as other American countries by initiating, organizing and conducting research mainly focused on the inventory of Neotropical and Nearctic biotas as well as global biodiversity, ecology and the geographical distribution of organisms.

2.2. To promote cooperation between scientists, educational workers, other people from the Baltic States and the United States, as well as other American countries by initiating, organizing and implementing various international and national educational programs and educational projects based on the knowledge of global biodiversity, functioning and distribution of organisms.

2.3. To inform and educate society about scientific innovations by various means of dissemination (conferences, lectures, other events and publications or by any other means) and by focusing on current issues involving the inventory of global biodiversity and the results of biotaxonomic research, data on ecology and geographical distribution of organisms and, in particular, on the following global threats to society: global biodiversity crisis, climate change, and destructive human impact on the environment.

2.4. To cooperate with legal and natural persons from the United States, Canada, other American countries, as well as from the Baltic States and all over the world, including representatives of science, business, authorities and other fields, organizations, enterprises, institutions and foundations which are able to contribute to the implementation of the Mission of the Institute intellectually, financially or in any other ways.

3. When implementing the objectives, the Institute may engage in the following activities:

3.1. To organize and carry out research and to provide scientific services;

3.2. To organize and carry out educational activities and to provide services for education and event organization;

3.3. To participate in education/training of students of college and university studies and participate in training of other specialists;

3.4. To train scientists;

3.5. To prepare various publications and to provide services for the preparation of publications;

3.6. To apply scientific and other expertise, and to provide services for scientific and other expert work;

3.7. To create intellectual products related to the implementation of the Mission.
